CHILD PROTECTION

1.6a ICT in the Pre-School

Policy statement

We aim to ensure the safe use of all information, communications technologies used within the preschool and to make sure that staff and children benefit from the technologies offered by the pre-school.

Procedures

Computer/laptop/tablets use by Children

  • Children will be supervised at all times while using the computer/laptop/tablet by a member of staff and be involved in discussions about electricity, wires and keeping safe.

  • Any leads and wires are tucked away behind the computer and the main cable is not in children’s play space.

  • Children using the computer will have their posture supported by a firm chair where their feet are positioned flat on the ground.

  • Children will be positioned so that they can clearly see the screen to ensure they are not straining their necks, ideally looking straight ahead or slightly down but not looking up.

  • Children are discouraged from using the computer for more than 10 minutes each.

  • At present the computer does not have connection to the internet, thereby keeping the children safe from seeing any unwanted material.

  • All programs used are supplied by educational companies and are loaded onto computer from CDs.

Computer/laptop/tablets use by staff

  • Children’s personal records which are held on the staff computer are password protected which only management/pre-school staff are able to access. These are only kept for as short a period as necessary.

  • The laptop/computer and tablets are protected by Antivirus software which is managed and updated by our IT technician.

  • Staff are able to access the internet for the purpose of developing their practice and knowledge as well as printing off relevant information and picture illustrations.

  • The laptop/computer and tablets are kept in a locked cupboard out-of-hours and are not taken off the premises.
