The provider must take necessary steps to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
BCC – The Ark Pre-School
Safeguarding children
6.8 Sunscreen policy
Policy statement
The Ark preschool aims to ensure that all children using the preschool garden throughout the summer months have had sunscreen applied before the child plays outside. Where possible the Ark preschool requires parents to apply sunscreen to their child before they attend the preschool session.
Children need to play outside to ensure they have access to a good level of vitamin D for good bone growth. At all times the Ark Preschool will ensure that children have access to the preschool garden, however at times of very hot, sunny weather the Ark staff will ensure there is adequate shade for the children or refrain from being in the direct sunlight.
Procedures
-
Children should have sunscreen applied before the beginning of their session
-
Where necessary Ark staff will encourage children to apply their own sunscreen with the supervision of a staff member.
-
For children who are unable to apply sunscreen, a staff member will apply the cream to the child’s skin while seated in the preschool room with other staff present.
